It uses a logistic function to model binary dependent variables.<\/p>\n<p>In logistic regression, the target variable has two possible values like yes\/no. Imagine if we represent the target variable y taking the value of \u201cyes\u201d as 1 and \u201cno\u201d as 0. Then, according to the logistic model, the log-odds of y being 1 is a linear combination of one or more predictor variables. So let\u2019s say that we have two predictor or independent variables namely x1 and x2, and let p be the probability of y being equal to 1. Then according to the logistic model:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/E1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78718\" src=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/E1.png\" alt=\"Logistic model in R\" width=\"344\" height=\"103\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By exponentiating the equation, we can recover the odds:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/E2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78719\" src=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/E2.png\" alt=\"Logistic regression in r\" width=\"287\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Which gives us the probability of y being 1. If p is closer to 0, then y=0 and when p is closer to 1 then y=1. These classifications have been made based on the number of values the dependent variable can take.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Binary logistic regression in R<\/h3>\n<p>In binary logistic regression, the target variable or the dependent variable is binary in nature i.e. it has only two possible values.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ex: whether a message is a spam message or not.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>2. Multinomial logistic regression<\/h3>\n<p>The target variable in a multinomial logistic regression can take three or more values but these values do not have any definite order of preference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ex: the most preferred type of food (Indian, Italian, Chinese, etc.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>3. Ordinal logistic regression<\/h3>\n<p>In ordinal logistic regression, the target variable has three or more possible values and these values have an order or preference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ex: star ratings for restaurants<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Practical Implementation of Logistic Regression in R<\/h2>\n<p>Now, we are going to learn by implementing a logistic regression model in R. We will use the titanic dataset available on Kaggle. You can also get the dataset here. Using this dataset, we will fit a logistic model that should be able to predict whether a person may survive the titanic or not.<\/p>\n<p>1. We will be using the<strong> data.table, plyr, and the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rdocumentation.org\/packages\/stringr\/versions\/1.4.0\">stringr packages <\/a>for this. The dataset consists of 12 different variables, five of which are integers, two are numeric and five are character variables.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"null\">str(train_data)<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/3.logistic-regression-in-r-sttr-function.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78577\" src=\"https:\/\/techvidvan.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/3.logistic-regression-in-r-sttr-function.png\" alt=\"logistic regression in r - sttr function\" width=\"1299\" height=\"741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. The variable cabin has too many empty entries. Also the variables PassengerId, Name, and Ticket only provide indexing and no further information. So we will drop these three variables. Age also has a lot of missing entries. We can replace these missing entries with an average of the rest of the entries. As Embarked has only two missing entries, it would be very easy to just omit the to incomplete rows.
